Your Role as a Foster Carer

Fostering is more than just providing a temporary home. It's about offering care, guidance, and support to rescue dogs.

As a foster carer, you'll play a crucial role in their rehabilitation, helping them learn new routines and behaviors.

Remember, fostering* isn't about choosing dogs you want to adopt. It's about providing a safe and loving environment for dogs in need.

*We have a policy that you must foster with us at least five times before you “foster fail.” If, after your fifth foster, you decide you can’t imagine life without your foster dog, you can submit an application — and you’ll usually have the first opportunity to adopt.

Our Role and Supporting You

When a new dog arrives, we prioritise their immediate care. This includes bathing, nail trimming, and assessing their overall health. We also observe their interactions with our other dogs to determine their social compatibility.

We believe in active involvement in our dogs' care. I personally accompany them to all vet appointments to ensure their needs are met and any necessary treatments or surgeries are approved promptly.

Our foster carers are encouraged to participate in their foster dog's care. However, they may need to handle early morning drop-offs and pick-ups for surgeries. We prefer foster homes to be located near our rescue base in Lethbridge, unless you're a vet nurse specializing in patella surgery recovery.

We understand the desire to add a furry friend to your family. Once a dog is ready for adoption, we'll post their information, requirements, and an application link on our Facebook page.

What we're looking for

Location &
Vet Access

Our rescue is based in Lethbridge near Geelong, with vets in Bannockburn, Moolap, and Colac. Foster carers need to be available for vet drop-offs, often early mornings (8am), as appointments depend on availability.

Suitable
Homes

→ No-pet homes

→ Cat-free homes

→ Child-free (or aged 10+ years)

→ Homes with a small, calm dog (ideal for rehabilitation)

→ Safe and secure fencing

→ Inside space to sleep at night, rest and recover

Support &

Supplies

We provide everything required for our dogs. Vet fees and all medical expenses are covered by Tiny Tails.

When donations allow, dog food is supplied, though carers may occasionally need to provide their own.

Care &
Training Needs

Rescue dogs require patient guidance—help with toileting, meal manners, lead walking, building trust, and socialisation. Some dogs may be fearful, shut down, or display fear aggression.

If you feel you can tick ✔️ the boxes to the above requirements, please click on the link below and fill in a foster application form.
